Beginning/Novice: It's hard to remember what it was like at that level, but I see a lot of beginners not knowing where the ball is going.
Take some time in practice, and hit all different shots...shots that hit the ceiling first, front wall then ceiling, sidewall first, front wall sidewall, and back wall shots. Pay close attention to where the ball lands and how the ball reacts differently based on what wall it hits first, and how hard the ball is hit. Once you know where the ball is going you'll hit better shots, and have an edge on someone who isn't as adept.
Along the same lines, a little work on the service game will go a long way as well. Usually at any level, the one that serves the best will win. Make sure the ball is deep and not coming off the back wall.
