One of the highlights of the 2008 US OPEN Racquetball Championships is the St. Jude Pro-Am Charity Doubles tournament held on Tuesday evening. The event raised nearly $9,000 for St. Jude bringing the US OPEN history total to over $169,000. A very exuberant Stacey Young from Arlington, Virgina felt like he won the lottery as his name was called to be paired with three-time US OPEN Champion Kane Waselenchuk. “Kane is an incredible player and for me to get the chance to be on the same court with him and watch him work his magic was special,” said Stacey. The other finalists, Bob“Action” Jackson and Mitch “Wild Thing” Williams defeated Javier Moreno and Sal Perconti, two former winners of the Pro-Am doubles event to reach the finals against Stacey and Kane.
After a rough start in the first game, Bob and Mitch came out with a 3-0 lead before their opponent’s knew what hit them. After a few long rallies the dynamic duo of Stacey and Kane found their groove and tied the score at 8-8. Kane started hitting some incredible touch shots in the right front corner that left everyone shaking their heads in disbelief as they won the match 15-12. “Stacey was fun to play with and I could tell he really wanted to win,” said Kane. “It feels good to be back and I enjoy doing anything I can for St. Jude.”
