How To Play

New to racquetball?

To play a game of racquetball you only need a few things to get started. Most racquetball equipment and accessories can be purchased seperately or starter kits can be purchased for about $30 from a club proshop or sporting goods retail store.
Racquet (Cost anywhere from $20-$200, depends on budget, and willingness to pay for feel and technology.)
Eyewear (Recommended and important, helps reduce the risk of injury if you are hit in the eye.)
Ball (Balls come in different colors such as blue, green, lavender and black. Any color will do.)
Glove. (Optional, this will help you keep a firm grip on the racquet during those fast rallies.)
Shoes (Any type of indoor court or tennis shoe, there are shoes designed specifically for racquetball.)

For more information on how to play, tips from the pro's, video instruction and more visit Racquetball University online.

Serving Out-Of-Order Explanation

Survey About Serving Out-of-orderThe Board of Directors approved the rule limiting the length of the wrist cord, rejected the “one serve for all open AGE divisions” concept, and decided to revisit the penalty for “serving out-of-order” in light of some newly offered factors.  Although large majorities of those voting favored a change to the current rule, precise degree of the “change” is what’s still under consideration.  Three possible alternatives are being considered: (1) assess the “out” penalty, but limit the points deducted to only those scored “out-of-order while the team is still serving (this was what was originally considered), (2) assess the “out” penalty, but don’t deduct any points, and (3) eliminate this rule entirely and just let the players serve in any order they want each time the team comes in to serve.

Alternatives (2) and (3) factor in the difficulty of recalling exactly how many points were scored.  Alternative (3) also asks the question “Is there really any advantage to serving in any particular order and, if not, then why is there a penalty at all?

Please take a moment to express your opinion in the poll below. We will use this information to help with the rule change.

US OPEN Moves To Minneapolis
After 14 years in Memphis, the US OPEN Racquetball Championships will be moving to the great City of Minneapolis, October 20-24, 2010. The announcement was made at USA Racquetball’s headquarters in Colorado Springs, CO.
US OPEN Event Director Doug Ganim stated, “This is an incredibly exciting time in the history of the US OPEN. Due to the explosive growth of the event, we found ourselves with the challenge of identifying a new host city that could handle the size and scope of the tournament now and into the future. We were already using four different clubs in Memphis and found that we needed to add a fifth club. One was just not available.”....Read More

Carson Wins Fifth National Title
Once again the country's best racquetball players were at the Downtown YMCA, May 26-31 2010, in Houston, TX to compete in the 2010 USA Racquetball National Singles Racquetball Championships presented by Head/Penn Racquet Sports. The event was also sponsored by Ektelon, Wilson, ProKennex, Gearbox, Dr Pepper/Snapple, Academy Sports, Carrabba's Italian Grill and Racquetskinz.
The “Finals” is the only national championship for singles competition in open, skill, age group divisions as well as the newly added Military divisions. On top of a full week’s worth of play in the largest event in racquetball, players also enjoyed special activities all week long. Nearly 540 players competed for the right to be named "National Champion" in 70+ divisions separated by age, skill, and age-skill. In addition, semi-finalists in the Men's and Women's National Team Qualifier Divisions earned one year appointments to the U.S. National Team. In this year's final of the Men's U.S. Team Qualifier division, Rocky Carson defeated Jack Huczek, 15-11, 11-5.
The Women's U.S. Team final ended with Cheryl Gudinas defeating Kerri Wachtel 15-3, 15-9.
Gudinas's title was her 8th U.S. Nationals singles victory and the win tied her with Michelle Gould for the most U.S. National singles title by a woman. Carson won his fifth U.S. National singles title, and second in the last three years. With the victories Carson and Gudinas will play for the US in Korea at the IRF World Championships in August. Racquetball Participation Increases

Jansen Allen and Patric Mascorro - Photo: www.darrelllawrence.com

While the American economy may be suffering, many sports, fitness, and recreation activities are growing in popularity, including racquetball. According to the latest Sporting Goods Manufacturers Association’s Report (2009 Report), since the year 2000 racquetball saw an increase of 2% in participation. This report offers the most up-to-date statistics and analysis. Many other sports such as golf-6%, ice skating-7.7%, skateboarding-25%, badminton-12.2%, and baseball-12% all showed a decrease in participation. Most traditional sports have showed a decline over the last period but some sports including racquetball have increased according to the 2009 SGMA report.

Quote from Physical Activity Council--"The most traditional sports have showed a decline since 2000 but tennis and racquetball have increased."
